Gracie Humaitá Noosa is an official affiliate of Gracie Humaitá from Brazil founded by Grand Master Hélio Gracie, which is now led by his son, Master Royler Gracie. Gracie Humaitá Noosa is dedicated to changing the community by helping students reach their fullest potential and to use Jiu Jitsu to help to change their lives for the better. Whether you're advanced BJJ practitioner or a beginner, we're dedicated to developing and improving your self preservation, self-defense, confidence and the potential in martial arts for both kids and adults on the Sunshine Coast.
Gracie Humaitá (pronounced ‘oo-mai-TAH’) is the name of the world's first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy. Founded by Hélio Gracie and his brothers in the 1920s, the Gracie Humaitá team represents the purest and most direct connection to the founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
“Always assume that your opponent is going to be bigger, stronger and
faster than you; so that you learn to rely on technique, timing and
leverage rather than brute strength”
Grandmaster Helio
Gracie.
Both of Professor Will’s parents are Black Belts in various styles of Martial Arts, with his father holding multiple Black Belts in different styles – so you could say it was in his blood. Living in an apartment above the family academy, Martial Arts training under his parents started from a very young age in Brisbane, Queensland, predominantly in Japanese Ju Jitsu and Judo.
Always gravitating towards the grappling side of the arts, Professor Will was exposed to BJJ (known as Ground Fighting in Australia prior to UFC 1) as a child, but started formally training in BJJ in 2005 during his final year of high school. Competing locally, interstate, and overseas, he traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2011 where he met Master Royler Gracie, head of Gracie Humaita, and joined the Gracie Humaita Team. He returned to Rio to train in Brazil again in 2013. Traveling to train in San Diego every year for 10 years and visiting other locations all over the world to learn has been a significant component of Professor Will’s journey in BJJ. Earning his Black Belt directly under Master Royler Gracie in San Diego in 2018 means Professor Will has a very direct lineage, which is unique in Australia and something he is very proud of. Having only ever taught Martial Arts as a career since he was 16, Professor Will has spent a lifetime on the tatami teaching, training, and learning from others all over the world.
Lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Royler Gracie > William Tritton
